I wrote We Are Each Others Harvest to amplify and elevate Black farmers’ voices and stories and to remind readers that Black people have a long and complicated historical connection to American soil.
But while this book celebrates Black farmers’ hard work and ingenuity, their resilience and determination, the fact is, the landscape for them is as challenging as ever.
Many of the prejudices and practices that Black farmers have endured continue to this day. As a result of generations of targeted discrimination, only 5% or 45,500 black farmers remain, down from 925,798 a century ago. Today, Black farmers own just 4.7 million acres of land, a paltry 2% of arable American farmland, down from 14% in the 1920s.
I believe it’s not enough to name the problem. We must help solve it.
That is why I have partnered with the San Francisco Foundation to establish ‘Black Harvest Fund,’ a donor advised fund to aid these hard-working men and women and give them a fair and fighting chance. The fund will distribute grants to certified non-profits that advance the work of Black farmers and farmers of color.

Thank you for helping me address one of the persistent legacies of slavery in the United States.
